NIMHANS Hospital Bangalore

National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) is a pioneer  government hospital of the Bangalore city in Mental Health and Neuro Sciences. It is a is a multidisciplinary Institute for excellent academic pursuit and patient care in the area of mental health and Neuro Sciences. 

It is an autonomous body that was established in the year 1974, with the amalgamation of Mental Hospital and All India Institute of Mental Health (under Government of India).

Procedure for Patient Registration in Out Patient Department (OPD)

Patients can get registered  at the Screening block in the Outpatient Department (between 8.00 am and 11.30 am, Monday through Saturday). Patients who  produce a reference letter to a particular faculty will get preference for registration. 

Patients who are visiting for the first time are evaluated by a General Medical Officer here and he determines the nature of illness. The patient is subsequently referred to the appropriate specialty within the institute.

In patient and out patient clinical services in Neurosurgery department

Emergency and Causality

  • These services are available 24 hours a day
  • These services are supported by junior, senior residents and a faculty member
  • The casualty block has 3 areas
  • In total ten beds are available for patients under observation, who need an admission on the short-term emergency basis

Out Patient services

  • These are run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from morning 9.00 A.M
  • In Patient services
  • There are 123 beds available for the patients admitted for surgery
  • For postoperative patients 10 beds are available
  • A  fully armed intensive care facility is available. Ten neurosurgical patients can be admitted and managed here at a time.
  • The ICU facility includes monitor, equipment to monitor intracranial pressure and modern ventilator for each patient. It is observed by a resident neuroanaesthetist and a neurosurgeon 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
  • There are 6 operation theatres out of which one is reserved always only for emergencies.

Clinical Services of the Dept of Psychiatry

Out-patient services:

  • Consultation-Liasion Psychiatry, Neuro-psychiatric Extension Clinics at five centres and Special Clinics related to Schizophrenia, Obsessive-Compulsive disorders
  • Metabolic Disorders, Geriatric Psychiatry, Perinatal Psychiatry and Tobacco Cessation Clinic.
  • Centralized services for Modified Electroconvulsive therapy, EEG, Intensive Care facilities
  • Walk-in-clinic for diagnostic screening, Family Psychiatry Centre, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Centre
  • Mental Retardation Clinic, Community Mental Health Services, De-addiction Centre , Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre.
