Cricket has always been a favorite sport for the people of Bangalore. With teams like the Royal Challengers Bangalore & Bangalore Brigadiers, cricket is spread across every nook & corner of Bangalore. Players from Bangalore have been very strong contenders in national & international cricket matches like IPL’s, World Cups and T20’s. The Karnataka State Academy Association or the present Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore is one of the most famous cricket stadiums in the world which has hosted many world cups and other test matches. Rahul Dravid, Robin Uthappa, Anil Kumble, Vinay Kumar, Roger Binny are some of the stars of cricket belonging to Bangalore.
In the field of Badminton the home-team of the BOP group-The Banga Beats (Indian Badminton League) has always been very famous. Players like Anup Srihar, Prakash Padukone, SRK Murthy etc were the famous players of their times. Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, White Peacock Badminton Academy, Tom’s Badminton Academy are one of he most prominent ones in Bangalore.
A Women Tennis Tournament called the Canara Bank Bangalore Open (2003-2008) was the biggest women’s tournament in the south. Mahesh Bhupati, the Grand Slam Winner, also belongs to Bangalore. KSLTA Tennis Stadium, Tennis Village & Kanteerava Indoor Stadium have been a host to many Tennis Events in the Silicon City of India.
The Bangalore Warhawks emerged as an Americal Football Team from the Garden City. In the road to promote football, Bangalore has also come up with Bangalore Youth Football League, which would encourage the youth as well as the children to indulge themselves in the game. Bangalore is a home to a Football Stadium of its own, South United Football Club and Karnataka State Football Association to take care of the budding talents in this field. Two of the eminent names attached to Bangalore are Shanmugam Venkatesh & Mani Maran.
With respect to city's love for the sports, the city authorities
have planned to form up sports cities in different parts like, Chikaballapur,
Kolar and at Mysore
road. The sports city is supposed to house world class facilities and will be
used to nurture the upcoming talent to shine at its fullest. With this announcement,
the athletes of the city and the state have begun dreaming big. A new ray of hope for even the least popular sports like Kabaddi, was the main idea behind bringing this forward.
